What is BOTOX®

Botox® is a substance that has been used to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines for decades. Botox® cosmetic injections reduce signs of age by blocking the signals sent from nerves to the muscles. By doing so, the impacted muscle can no longer contract, reducing the deep wrinkles of expression. While in the past, Botox® injections were only used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, doctors have found numerous other Botox® applications. While Botox® is technically referred to as a “toxin”, despite its scary name, it is incredibly safe and injections have minimal, if any, side effects. In fact, because Botox® is injected directly into muscle and doesn’t get absorbed into the body or blood, it has less potential side effects than most over-the-counter pills, including Tylenol®, Advil® and Aspirin.

What is BOTOX® Used For?

Botox® uses have expanded in recent years beyond just wrinkle reduction. Below are some of the most common Botox® uses.

Reduce and Prevent Wrinkles

Botox® injections can target specific areas of facial wrinkling, particularly those areas with wrinkles that result from expression. By reducing the ability to create the wrinkle with movement, patients look younger and more refreshed. In addition, by gently suppressing these areas of muscle movement, Botox® cosmetic injections can also prevent the formation of future wrinkles. This concept of “prophylactic” or “preventative” Botox® is the reason it is now recommended that patients start treatment at a younger age.

Facial Slimming and TMJ Treatment

If a patient has a wide lower jaw, usually enlarged masseter muscles are to blame. These muscles sit over the jaw and help with the action of chewing. Patients with enlarged masseter muscles typically also have TMJD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder), related to the grinding of teeth or clenching, which can occur at night while sleeping. Patients with TMJD can have symptoms of face, head and neck pain, dental issues and ear problems. Botox® injections gently weaken, and then shrink, the masseter muscle, giving the patient a slimmer, “heart-shaped” face, without impacting any normal functioning of the jaw. By weakening the masseter muscle, Botox® is also a powerful treatment for TMJD.

Treatment for Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

If a patient suffers from excessive sweating in a specific location - like the face, scalp, armpits or hands - then Botox® can provide tremendous relief. Botox® injections can dramatically reduce sweating, allowing a return everyday life without the fear of untimely sweating.
